Our model for Personal Effectiveness consists of a framework and the six key practices themselves. Each key practice corresponds to an element in the framework.
The six elements of the framework are related and work together. It is not a process.
If you are effective then you will be doing all the elements well: you will not be picking one element and focussing on that in isolation.
We use the term 'Reflection Phase' to describe the use of the framework in thinking about effectiveness.
The framework can also be used as a powerful thinking tool to reflect on the effectiveness of ourselves or others, whether this be related to the past, present or future:
- reflect on today's current activity: are things being handled as well as they might be in the here and now?
- reflect on previous activity: what was done well and less well in terms of effectiveness?
- reflect on future activity: what needs to be done to ensure or improve effectiveness?
- reflect on the activity of others: what can be learnt from others, in terms of things to emulate or things to avoid?
Doing this enables continuous learning and continuous improvement.
What you will have realised by now, in reading this, is that not only can you apply the framework (and practices) to yourself but also to others, a group, a department, a business unit, the organisation, a project, a business process, a strategy! See the section on Scope for more about this. The Framework is a VERY powerful tool!
Each of the six elements in the framework has flexible tools and techniques that can be applied to help carry out the corresponding action imperative.
